[Linux] Xmonad = Black screen
complete
M
Mark Mandel
Setup:
Debian (latest), running Xmonad as tiling WM, and Cinnamon for decorations. 2 Monitor setup. Intel graphics. Have an Nvidia card, but not sure if enabled.
Logging into Screen is fine, but once I join a meeting, one of my screens goes black.
I see the "Connecting" widget in the bottom right, and as soon as it connects, one of the is when one of my screens goes black.
The black screen follows my mouse - so if I go to the left, it's on my left monitor, if I go to the right it goes to my right monitor.
Since I started the process on a terminal, I can ctrl+c to exit.
I tried to xprop the black screen, but only got information on the window underneath.
Happy to provide more information as required!

Excellent! Glad it worked. I’m marking this closed, but if it still doesn’t work for anyone, just holler and I’ll reopen this bug.

J Sherwani (Pop Team): Ahhh! That makes so much sense. Can we document this somewhere?

Ah I think I have an idea — our overlay window is overlaid on top of your entire screen wherever the mouse is. It’s meant to be a transparent window, but in your case, it seems that Xmonad isn’t respecting that setting.
I just googled and found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/xmonad/comments/59hrnh/help_set_transparency_on_terminal/ — is it possible that a compositor like Compton could solve this issue?
Or is there some other setting in Xmonad or Cinnamon (or something entirely separate) that you can set to allow transparent windows (or at least for it to not mess with a window’s transparency settings)?

J Sherwani (Pop Team): That was it. I launched compton and tried screen and it work beautifully. Thank you!

J Sherwani (Pop Team): This has solved the issue for me. Thank you!

J Sherwani (Pop Team): This worked for me, thanks

We just pushed out an update which fixes an issue with X11 multi-monitor use. I’m not sure if it’ll make a difference on this issue, but could you please update (
snap refresh screen
) and run (/snap/screen/current/screen/Screen
) to try again? Please let us know if there’s any improvement. If it still doesn’t work, could you confirm this isn’t the same as the Wayland issue (https://screen.canny.io/bugs/p/linux-no-screen-capture-when-running-under-wayland)?
Thank you all!

J Sherwani (Pop Team): I've just checked - I'm still getting black screen, no multi monitor, X11. Please see my original comment. If you need any additional details, I'm happy to help and/or test dev build. You can also contact me on email.

I have the exact same issue. I'm running xfce4 in Ubuntu 19.10.
The black screen follows the mouse. I'm running Thinkpad X1.

Thanks for reporting! We haven't checked with additional Window Managers, but this is on our todo list and we hope to update everyone soon!

@mustafa-hashmi-2: FWIW, this works with i3 on Ubuntu - maybe it's a Debian/version issue instead?
Mustafa Hashmi (Screen Team)
Bennett Piater: Thanks for the update. Can you please confirm the Ubuntu release where it does work? Thanks!

@mustafa-hashmi-2: Kubuntu 19.10, but i3 as WM, started through SDDM.
Note that multi-monitor support is broken (https://screen.canny.io/bugs/p/linux-single-screen-selection-shares-all-3-monitors-squished-into-one-unreadable), but I do not get a blank screen.
Thomas Nielsen: are you using a login manager? If not, that may be the underlying cause - I know that TeamViewer does not work without one.
T
Thomas Nielsen
Bennett Piater: I'm using teamviewer without any issues. :)
If I can help with any kinds of logs, I'd be more than happy!
B
Bennett Piater
Thomas Nielsen: So you are not using a login manager, but running startx manually?
T
Thomas Nielsen
Bennett Piater: Nope, just regular ubuntu 18.04.04 :) using the GDM, but probably because it's running wayland...
B
Bennett Piater
Thomas Nielsen: oh, well wayland is an entirely a different beast! I didn't know that xmonad can run under wayland.
could you upvote https://screen.canny.io/bugs/p/linux-no-screen-capture-when-running-under-wayland instead, since wayland is probably your issue?

Same with me, with i3wm. I ended up hitting alt-enter to open a new terminal, then blindly typing 'pkill -f screen' to stop the app. There was no other way to recover, short of rebooting.
Related to this: when I share a screen, the other party does not actually see the shared screen, just a blank black screen. Subsequent drawing from each side shows up, but not the background, nor any previous strokes, prior to the second (android) session connecting

I have the exact same setup as Michal Forys, and experience the same issue. :)

Hello,
I've got the same problem.
I'm running Ubuntu 18.04, i3wm, 1 monitor setup, intel graphics, no additional card.
